The importance of skills oriented toward possible futures
Major technological, demographic, geopolitical, economic and climate transformations are acting systemically and simultaneously at both global and local levels, calling for new models of leadership and direction. To navigate complexity and uncertainty, organizations and communities need mindsets, skills and methodologies for strategic imagination and foresight exploration, grounded in long-term perspectives and transformative capabilities. The future offers no evidence and cannot be predicted, but it is possible to investigate different alternative scenarios and prepare in advance for risks and opportunities. By combining strategic foresight and innovation methodologies, medium- and long-term future images can be used to shape strategies in the present and trigger pathways of change in the near future.
